Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804

An EPD involves carrying out a life-cycle inventory (LCI) and a life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) and presentation of other indicators, e.g. type and quantity of waste produced. The life-cycle inventory contains data on resource consumption, e.g. energy, water, renewable resources and emissions into the air, water and the soil. The impact assessment is based on the results of the life-cycle inventory and specifies environmental impacts.

The Institute Construction and Environment (IBU) from Germany is an established EPD program operator and verifier. Its independent expert advisory board ensures that the product-specific requirements (PCR instructions) for certain groups of construction products conform to the normative requirements of ISO and CEN standardisation and is responsible for the quality assurance of the verification process in the IBU EPD programme. Therefore the user of EPDs can relate on verified environmental information about the applied construction products.

EPD "Structural Steel: Sections and Plates"

Under the management of bauforumstahl, the steel profile manufacturers ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel, Peiner Träger GmbH and Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH and the heavy plate manufacturers Dillinger Hütte and GTS Industries, Tata Steel and Ilsenburger Grobblech joined forces to disclose their environmental data in an EPD that complies with EN 15804. The EPD Structural Steel: Sections and Plates (EPD-BFS-20130094-IBG1) was independently verified by IBU. In addition to the results of life cycle assessments for manufacturing and recycling potential it also contains product definitions and data associated with the building physics, data on raw materials, source of materials, descriptions of manufacturing the product, information on product processing and standardisation and data on the conditions of use, exceptional impacts and the post-utilisation phase. It covers structural steel sections, steel bars and heavy plates in the steel grades S235 to S960.
To meet also the LEED specific informations an supplemantary sheet is included.

Content of the EPD

The EPD Structural Steel: Sections and Plates includes:

  • Product definitions
  • Building physics aspects
  • Information about the raw materials and material origin
  • Description of the product manufacturing
  • Data on use and end of life phase
  • Information on product processing
  • The results of the LCA. This includes the production incl. extraction of raw materials, energy supply and transport + reuse and recycling at the end of life

This EPD documents a collection rate of 99%, resulting from 11% re-use and 88% recycling. For structural steel this literally means recycling while maintaining or improving the material properties.

The environmental data for structural steel covered by this EPD is more than 37% less than the data from ÖKOBAUDAT (official average data for germany) and even significantly less for individual environmental parameters. This reflects the fact that the
participating European manufacturers of structural steel have continuously
invested in modern, eco‐friendly steel production retaining high social standards.

Scope of the EPD

The EPD applies to 1 t of structural steel. It covers steel products of the grades S235 to S960 rolled out to structural sections, merchant bars and heavy plates. Structural steel is intended for bolted, welded or otherwise connected constructions of buildings, bridges and other structures, or in composite steel and concrete structures.

This environmental product declaration is valid for the following products:

  • Plates produced by Dillinger Hütte and GTS Industries, Tata Steel on the Site Scunthorpe and Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH.
  • Sections produced by ArcelorMittal with the sites in Ostrava, Differdange, Dabrowa, Esch-Belval, Bergara,Hunedoara, Madrid, Olaberria, Zaragoza, Warszawa and Rodange, Tata Steel with the sites in Scunthorpe and Lackenby as well as Peiner Träger GmbH and Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH.

For products of different manufacturers other sources, for example their EPDs if available (see below) or average data like ÖKOBAUDAT, have to be used.

Examples for the use of environmental data from the EPD

To gain knowledge about the environmental impacts of different construction methods for single storey industrial buildings different types of constructions are considered. The focus is here on the structural frame and the employed construction products. In addition, LCA  of  several types  of  building  envelopes are compared as well as effects
of transport.
